Discussion:
Whatever happened to the Modula-2 programming environment at Cambridge?
(too old to reply)

I just read the very interesting article "A programming environment for
Modula-2" by Peter Robinson and Mick Jordan published in the Software
Engineering Journal, July 1988. In it, they describe the CAD tools,
compilers, and other tools written at the U. of Cambridge Computer
Laboratory. All were written in Modula-2 for various platforms.

Before I start pestering the people at Cambridge, does anyone reading
this list have any notion of what happened to it all?

There is a discussion dated 1988 in this newgroup titled "Cambridge Modula-2/Mod-2 for Suns". A reply from Peter Robinson says in part:

"The Computer Laboratory has now put the distribution of its Modula-2
systems for VAX/Unix, 68000 (including Sun) and 32016 in the hands of a
local company. Please contact them for further information: Qudos Limited"

It seems to be this one.

A little searching on the web revealed that Qudos Ltd (now Qudos
Technology Ltd) was founded in 1985 by Andy Hopper (now chair of the
CCL). They were acquired in 1993 but remain an independent CAD design &
proto-typing house.

Thank you for the information, Chris. I fear that the source is long gone.

It might still be worth contacting Peter Robinson in case he's a squirrel like me and hoarded the source code somewhere ;-)

According to their website he is now Professor of Computer Technology at the Computing Laboratory:
